Acetamide Usage And Synthesis

Referrence

Acetamide is a colorless, transparent needle like crystal with the smell of mouse secretion. Soluble in water, ethanol, chloroform, pyridine and glycerol, slightly soluble in ether.

Uses

It is mainly used as organic solvent, analytical reagent, solvent and plasticizer. It is also used in the synthesis of organic and dyes, the stabilizer of plasticizer and peroxide, the antacid in the production of cosmetics, and the preparation of sleeping pills and pesticides.

Acetamide is an amide derived from acetic acid with the molecular formula CH3CONH2. The pure product is a white crystalline solid at room temperature and can be obtained from the dehydration of ammonium acetate. It is used as a plasticizer and an important raw material for organic synthesis. Acetamide is not very flammable, but it gives off irritating smoke when burning. Inhalation, ingestion, skin and eye contact are toxic and may cause redness or pain. N, N-Dimethylacetamide (DMA), a derivative of acetamide, is a compound formed after the two hydrogen of acetamide amino group are replaced by methyl, which is often used as a solvent; N-methylacetamide is the simplest example of demonstrating peptide bonds. Acetamide is one of the organic compounds recently detected by the Green Bay radio telescope (GBT) in the central part of the Milky Way galaxy. Because acetamide contains amide bonds, which are similar to the peptide bonds connecting amino acids in proteins, this discovery supports the theory that life evolved from simple organic compounds.

Acetamide also can be used to synthesize cephalosporins.
